Protective clothing Cotton and nylon is used to make clothing for modern fencing. After the Smirnov incident in 1982 at Rome, Kevlar was added to the uniform pieces. However UV light and chlorine damages the Kevlar. Recently Dyneema fabric has been developed which has a puncture resistant quality and overcomes the weakness of the Kevlar. The FIE has made compulsory as a part of uniform. This fabric can resist an impact of 800 newtons force. Fencing kit includes A tight fitting jacket which goes between the legs covers the groin. A small padding or sewed cloth is also used to protect the groin. Folded fabric is sewed around the collar to prevent injuries around the neck. Plastron gives protection to the upper arm and sword arm side. Seam is absent at the armpit as it becomes a weak point. A glove is provided which serves a good grip as well it helps to protect the hand. A pair of short trousers called as breechers hold just below the knee. Socks which are of knee length cover the knee and the thighs. Flat sole shoes prevent damage from lunging. Masks protect the neck and can resist upto 12 kgs of force. The FIE regulation masks can stand upto 27 kgs of force. Techniques A great amount of fencing is relied to strike the opponent at the right place and right time. One of the opponents has to make a mistake and leave an opening so that the other can strike on it. It involves closing and opening the lines of defence and attack. However the Olympic federation has put a balance on speed, footwork and has also taken care of classical stances and methods at the same time. |
